Greetings From Our Pastor

What is the cost of discipleship? In the 1930's a Lutheran pastor and theologIan, Dietrich Bonhoeffer wrote a book called, "The Cost of Discipleship". Bonhoeffer spelled out what he thought was necessary to call oneself a follower of Christ. Bonhoeffer made a distinction between "cheap grace" (calling oneself a Christian but not living Christian values and morals) and "costly grace" (making
the right decision based on what is best for the whole, but might be inconvenient for us personally). I remember reading this book when I was in seminary and it having a profound impact on me. Following Christ is not always easy. We sometimes have to make tough choices and there is suffering that goes with those choices. These choices may sometimes go against the mainstream and may not be the "popular" thing to do, but they are the right thing to do and we know that in our heart. Our Gospel reading his weekend challenges us in a profound way to look deeply into our heart and ask ourselves the question, "what does it take for me personally to be a disciple?"

Next Sunday, September 12, is the Parish Festival at Sacred Heart in Manly. Hot Beef sandwich lunch with all the fixings, small item raffle and bake sale. Food will be served from 10:30 am - 1:00 pm. Mark your calendars and plan on attending.
